screen printing with Lucie Summers

On Sunday seven of us from the LMQG went to join Lucie Summers at her home in Suffolk for a screen printing workshop. We were welcomed with homemade brownies and chatted over tea before being led through to her bright studio and getting stuck in.
We had all sent our own designs to Lucie in advance as we were to print our own quilt labels and our screens were ready and waiting for us. Lucie explained to us how the screens are made and then showed us the art of screen printing.
With our bundles of fabric at the ready and a row of juicy coloured inks to play with we were off.
Lucie shared tips, gave advice and infused us with her passion for printing. As the day went on, Lucie then let us use some of her larger screens for some double printing. We got to use some of her designs and once they had dried, then printed our own design over the top.
The combinations are endless and the effects on different fabrics and prints fascinating. By the end of the session we had all got to grips with the techniques and were producing some impressive fabrics.

We also got to see ‘that’ quilt – it is stunning, and much bigger than I imagined it would be.
Lucie’s first collection with Moda is hitting the shops right now, get some while you can.
Group 1 ( group 2 will be going soon! )
Colette (me), Judith, Lucie, Ruth, Christine
Siobhan, Danielle, Atia
Thank you Lucie for being a terrific host and tutor, we had a fabulous time. We all went home with our screens and a pot of ink to play with, I have no idea how I will ever have the time to make enough quilts to go with the enormous number of labels I now have.
